Domain Names

Domain names are identification labels, defining the ownership, autonomy or authority over spaces on the internet, based on what is known as the Domain Name System (DNS). Domain names are made up of constituent parts known as labels, such as (www)(.)(wavenet)(.)(co)(.)(uk). In the hierarchical structure of a domain name, the top tier of the domain name is on the right. The lower subdivisions are then read from right to left in descending order.

The right to use a particular domain name is given by domain name registrars accredited by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Registries typically charge an annual fee for the use of a particular domain name, although this is technically a lease. Despite users being described as domain'owners' no legal ownership of a domain name is part of the agreement, and the payment of the fee guarantees only the right to exclusive use of any given domain name. More correctly, a domain'owner' should be referred to as a domain'holder'.

To acquire a domain name involves registering it. Registering a domain name is commonly done through a web hosting provider, who provide the hosting for the website you wish to be under any given domain name. The web hosting provider will have a list of domain names already registered and will lease these out to clients as discussed above. In this capacity, the web hosting provider is acting as a domain name registrar, and this service is based on the administration of registering domain names. It is this administration service that domain name registrars are selling to the public.
