Computer Hardware

What is computer hardware? The short answer is that it is everything that is not computer software. This answer might sound glib, but if you understand the difference between hardware and software it makes perfect sense.

A slightly more descriptive answer to the question is that computer hardware is everything involved in computers that you can physically see and touch, i.e. is in the real world. By extension, computer software are the instructions that make the computer hardware work or do what you want it to do, i.e. software are the instructions for a computer.

Examples of computer hardware include: the monitor, the screen that lets you see what you are doing with the computer; the keyboard, which lets you enter information to a computer; a mouse, which lets you point and click on things that appear on the monitor; a printer, so that you can print information from a computer so that you have something real to hold; a scanner, so that you can input information like pictures to a computer; and the computer itself, the heart of the operation.

The computer is not much to look at. The home computer, or PC, looks to be little more than a box. This box does of course contain lots of components which individually are also considered computer hardware. There are lots of components that can be included in a PC, but all PCs must contain: a central processing unit (CPU), the brains of the computer and contains the micro chip; a video card, which enables the monitor to work; and a mother board, something that everything else plugs into.
